Word karst comes from Slovenian word kras. Kras is perhaps Slovenian most distinct geological phenomenon. Throughout the millions of years water shaped the limestone in many ways, so different geological formations arose. The most atracttive ones are big caves, such as Postojna cave, which is our best known cave. Other famous caves are: The Ć kocjan Caves, which are on UNESCO's list of natural and cultural world heritage sites, Vilenica, Krizna jama cave and so on... Perhaps you didn't know that the noble Lipizzaner horse (Lipicanec) originated in Slovenia. Lipica, where the stud farm was established in 1580, is today a popular tourist center with a riding school, hotels, a swimming pool, a golf course, and a casino. Around Lipica there are also some orienteering maps. Karst phenomenon is especially relevant for orienteers, as it produced some of the most outstanding terrains with depressions and rock details. Karst is most obviously apparent in south-west (region, which is actually called Kras), south, and south-east Slovenia. Most of it is forest.
