Triglav national park is the only Slovenian national park, but it's quite big and we are very proud of it. It occupies mountain area, called Julian Alps, with highest peak Triglav (2864m). Triglav is a kind of Slovenian symbol. It's even on our national flag. The national park consits mostly of bare rock mountains and large areas of forests. Many grasslands, small alpine lakes can also be seen up in the mountains. In the lower parts, there are some interesting water bodies, like wild river Soca and lake, called Bohinjsko jezero. The old arhitecture in rural parts of Triglav national park is also something really worth seeing. Flora and fauna of Triglav national park is a typical alpine one, with Capra Ibex being the king of the mountains, and the bear (Ursus arctos), the king of the forests. However, bear is pretty rare in this part of Slovenia, so it is not likely for you to see it here. By far most popular summer activities in this part of Slovenia, are hiking and alpine climbing (which is perhaps Slovenians' most succesful sport, beside alpine skiing), but many tourists are also enjoying mountain biking, kayaking, rafting, parachute gliding, fly fishing and so on... At the peak of touristic season you will find some crowds at the most attractive places, but the huge part of Triglav national park is still peaceful wilderness.
